INTERVIEWS & DEBATES

Dealing with the Media

People outside of rodeo do not understand rodeo terminology or jargon.

Use words and examples that everyone can understand.

Stay calm and composed. Say what you have to say, then stop. Stick to your point.

DO NOT apologize for professional rodeo; take a strong, positive stand at all times.

MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER: If you don't know, say so! It is much worse to "guess" and say the wrong answer than to admit "you personally don't have the answer at this time, but that you will get the answer from someone that knows and get back to them"!

In all interviews be:

  • FRIENDLY
  • HONEST
  • BRIEF
  • SINCERE
  • DIRECT
  • POSITIVE
  • PREPARED
  • PROFESSIONAL

Dealing With Animal Extremists

DO NOT debate with animal extremists about animal welfare or animal rights issues.

Avoid public debate regarding incorrect news reports. Remember, you are always being watched by rodeo critics.

DON'T say things that could be misunderstood or do anything that could cause a problem later.
